EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Electrical and Electronics Technology Program started at MidAmerica Industrial Park on April 7th to train students for careers in manufacturing, energy, and automation—students gain hands-on training, earn college credit, and local companies expect over 1,100 new jobs in Oklahoma in the next five years.  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With the REAL ID deadline on May 7, anyone flying domestically must have a compliant ID—TSA will not let them pass security without proper documents. Tag agency agent Barbara Newey and Will Rogers World Airport manager Stacey Hamm said travelers should use the REAL ID checklist and prepare documents like a passport or matching birth certificate to avoid missing their flights.  News On 6
  • Oklahoma lawmakers advanced House Bill 490 on Monday to update Name, Image and Likeness laws so colleges can stay competitive if the court allows direct athlete payments. The bill clarifies that student-athletes are not state employees and lets colleges void contracts that violate the new rules—while universities like OU and OSU are prepared to pay players once the ruling is finalized.  News On 6
  • Governor Kevin Stitt criticized the Oklahoma Forestry Service for using only half the available resources to fight the March 14 wildfires — he tasked Agriculture Secretary Blayne Arthur and Public Safety Secretary Tricia Everest to prepare a report on response failures that will be completed this week.  KJRH
  • The Oklahoma State Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services was reported to be tens of millions in debt and cut funding for services provided by Tulsa nonprofits, which shocked local mental health providers. State lawmakers are reviewing missing funds and changes to vendor contracts while ensuring programs like COPES continue to operate—officials say accountability measures are under review.  FOX23
