Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 2nd of May.
Good morning, Broken Arrow.
🏘️ Community
Sandfest, a volleyball tournament organized by Trace Weldon, will be held on May 17-18 to raise funds for The Little Light House, which offers free education and therapy to families with special needs.
The event, started 18 years ago and now drawing over 40 teams in adult and junior divisions, aims to keep entry fees low to encourage community service (a strategy that helps boost local participation).
Oklahoma fisherman Bryan Baker set a state record by catching a bighead carp that weighed 118 pounds 10 ounces—while local officials issued flood warnings for Broken Arrow and nearby areas, noting moderate flooding may persist despite the heavy rains ending.
Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads as water levels remain high.
🚨 Crime
Broken Arrow Police Chief Lance Arnold said that after a month of grace to educate the public and dealerships, his department enforced a full crackdown on expired paper tags on Thursday, May 1st—targeting cases where criminals used the tags to hide their true identities.
Officers made case-by-case decisions on whether to issue warnings or impound vehicles.
