Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 30th of July.
Good morning, Broken Arrow.
🏘️ Community
Local food banks report rising demand as SNAP cuts leave families with less federal aid.
Nonprofits are rationing supplies and sharing surplus with partner programs (as seen at recent distribution events) to help community members in need.
💼 Business
Broken Arrow shoppers noticed a 1% infrastructure fee on receipts at Adams Creek Town Center, but City Manager Micheal Spurgeon said the fee was set privately by PDG-Broken Arrow & not approved by the city.
Retailers choose whether to pass on the fee, so consumers may see it across stores.
🌲 Environment
A Tulsa beekeeper at Shadow Mountain Honey Company said extreme heat is drying up bees' food, which may increase grocery prices; residents can help by planting native flowers.
The company will host its Great Tulsa Honey Sale this Saturday, Aug. 1 (61st St and Sheridan Rd).
🏛️ Government
A one mile stretch of Liberty Parkway Trail stays closed after a failing retaining wall raised safety concerns, and Broken Arrow awarded a contract (cost: $861,086 on June 15) to begin repairs in mid August that will take about four months, so officials ask residents to avoid the area.
🏥 Health
Paramedics responded to 13 heat-related calls Tuesday with seven patients taken to hospital.
Since July 1, EMSA handled 159 calls with 104 hospital visits and advises residents to cool off using local cooling centers (open during daylight hours).
