The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is set to rewrite the Section 106 rules to review local preservation input, and the proposal will soon undergo a federal public comment process.
The Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) warns the changes could reduce state and local participation.
Six months ago, the council rejected a rezoning request by the Islamic Society of Tulsa to build a mosque, and board member Dr. Muhammad Afzal said renewed hope grew as the DOJ began investigating zoning laws for religious sites (despite a recent letter from the Attorney General).
