  • 8-year-old Elliott Johnston from Broken Arrow organized his largest charity toy drive on August 11 — delivering 7,092 toys to OU Health and surpassing his goal of 6,500. His annual Hearts for Elliott Toy Drive, held on his birthday, supports sick kids while Elliott continues to face health challenges.  KJRH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tulsa County's Vision 2025 program finished its sales tax collections and delivered $648M for projects like the BOK Center, Route 66 improvements, and school upgrades. Judge LaFortune said that over 129,000 voters approved the initiative in 2003—projects that have since reshaped the county, including Broken Arrow.  KJRH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Metro school districts are following strict heat safety guidelines as student athletes return to sports practices in hot weather, with coaches giving water breaks and limiting practice times. Tomorrow, OSSAA will vote on a statewide extreme heat policy—rules that will set standards for coach training and safe practices for the upcoming season.  News On 6
  • Broken Arrow Public Schools has launched the My Ride K12 app that lets parents track school buses in real time by entering a student's ID, name, and birthdate. The app shows live bus arrival and departure times and is testing a digital boarding system at one elementary school — it is free to download.  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Manager Michael Spurgeon said the 2026 bond process is moving ahead with community surveys, a work session tomorrow night, and public hearings on August 28th, September 3rd, and September 25th. He added the plan includes a possible new library project in South Broken Arrow — a mixed-use option may be on the table if public support is strong.  News On 6
  • City officials said they asked a contractor to check the new water tower at New Orleans and Lynn Lane after drivers said it looked like it was leaning. A laser survey confirmed the 187-foot tower stands straight—its optical illusion is caused by ground slopes in different directions.  KRMG News
  • Former Broken Arrow Mayor Craig Thurmond—who served 20 years on the City Council—passed away at 71 on August 7 in his home. Funeral services will be held at LifeChurch on August 13 at 10 a.m.  FOX23
