  • Broken Arrow police officer Dakota Berry was cleared by the U.S. Attorney's Office for using lethal force during a routine traffic stop on Aug. 3 when suspect Sunny Demille brandished a handgun and ran—Berry fired four shots and Demille remains hospitalized.  KTUL
  • Wagoner County deputies are searching for a teenager accused of stealing a 12-pack of Twisted Tea from the E-Z Mart at 31st and 209th in Broken Arrow on Aug. 11—store clerk said the suspect, a skinny white teen in a black mask and hoodie, forced his way out and fled south on 209th.  KTUL

  • State chancellor Sean Burrage said Oklahoma colleges will not suffer a big drop in enrollment even though many schools nationwide face an enrollment cliff from lower birth rates after the Great Recession—steady local graduate numbers and more out-of-state students keep the numbers robust. He added that institutions like OU and OSU are growing and the state will keep investing in higher education to stay competitive.  Tulsa World

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board awarded $16.6 million in grants to communities and school districts to fight the opioid crisis. The $12.9 million for 31 local groups and $3.7 million for 16 school districts will fund treatment programs—mental health support and education—designed to reduce opioid abuse.  FOX23
  • The Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board awarded $16.6 million in grants to communities and school districts—$12.9 million for cities, counties and trusts and $3.7 million for schools—to fight the state's opioid crisis.
